Every summer after the 4th of July, our little corner of Washington starts to become more susceptible to wildfire smoke. And not long thereafter, we get calls coming in from families who can smell it inside their own homes.

Windows shut, system running, and the house still smells like a campfire. It's a frustrating call to take, honestly, because by the time someone can smell smoke indoors, the question is really just how much of it they've already been breathing.

So with burn season here again, we wanted to take a minute and explain something that most homeowners have never been told about the filter sitting in their system right now.

Your Filter Was Never Designed to Protect You

The filter in your furnace or air handler is primarily there to keep dust out of the equipment. It protects the machine. That surprises a lot of people, because we intuitively think that a “filter” must be cleaning the air for us, but this was never the intent.

And even at its actual job, a standard filter can only do so much. Dust gets through over time no matter how faithfully you change it or clean it, because at the end of the day it's a piece of paper or plastic sitting in the path of your airflow.

Here's why that matters more than you'd think: it only takes 1/18th of an inch of dust buildup to make the blower motor in your furnace or air handler work about 20 percent harder, and bad airflow is the number one reason HVAC systems fail.

So that thin gray layer you can barely see is wearing out your equipment early, and meanwhile it's doing nothing for the air your family is actually breathing.

What the Clean Air Kit Does Differently

The Clean Air Kit is two pieces of equipment that we install together because they're designed to work as a pair, an Air Scrubber and an Air Ranger. We’ll talk you through them one piece at a time.

First, we have the Air Scrubber. This lives in your ductwork and releases positive and negative ions into your home through the supply vents you already have. Those ions attach themselves to dust, smoke particles, pollen, pet dander, and all the other stuff floating around in your air.

Since the ions carry opposite charges, they attract each other and clump together, and once those particles get heavier, they can't stay suspended in the air anymore. They get pulled back toward your return vents and head for the filtration, which is exactly where you want them.

That's where the Air Ranger comes in. Instead of a paper filter, it's a metal cage with changeable components inside, and it's polarized. That means it works on the same principle as the scrubber. Think of it like having a magnet on the other end of the system.

All that ionized debris the Air Scrubber sent back through your returns gets attracted to the media and trapped there, instead of slipping through paper and settling back into your ducts.

The two units really are a synergistic pair that are greater than the sum of their parts, which is why we bundle them as a kit in the first place.
